WALT - identify similes and metaphors
S.C. - We can identify the similes which use 'as' We can identify the similes which use 'like' We can identify metaphors We can explain what the similes and metaphors mean/are telling us about what we are reading
Metaphors are a way to compare to by saying that one thing is another thing. For example, we say somebody is a fool. In
the past in Europe, a fool was a person who entertained the king or queen by doing silly things. The fool was a kind of clown. He often did crazy or stupid things to make people laugh. So when we call somebody a fool we really mean that he or she is doing something silly or stupid. We don’t really mean that they are somebody who entertains the king or queen. We are using a metaphor.
What do we mean when we say these things:
When we say someone is a pig we really mean that they are eating heaps or are acting like a pig and not using there table maners √
When we call someone an angel we really mean that they are really good. √
If we say someone is a giant we really mean that they are really tall. √
When we call a man an ogre or a woman a witch we really mean that they re really mean like a witch.√
When somebody plays cards and we call them a shark, we really mean that they are good at playing √
If we say that somebody is a volcano ready to explode, we really mean that they are angry and are going to shout or something. √
When we say somebody is bright we mean that they are very good at school.
Metaphors are imaginative ways to describe something by comparing that thing to something else. For example, if I wanted to say that Dan is tall, I could
say that Dan is a giant. Use a metaphor to describe somebody who is
:
man.-Mike is a mountain.
kind-Ella is a fairy god mother.
fast-Taylah is a cheater
slow- Sam is a turtle √
smart-Bradin is a calculator √
fat-the dog is a ballon √
sneaky-my sister is a sake √
angry-Grace is a bull. √
beautiful-mum is a flower. √
ugly-He is a witch
stubborn-she is camel √
short-Georgina is a mouse √
thin-Dan is a stick
silly-milly is a clown √
scared easily she is a jumpy cat. √

Similes are a way to compare two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’. For example, if I want to say that somebody swims well, I can say they swim like a fish because fish swim well. There are two basic patterns that you can use.
verb + like + noun

as + adjective + as + noun
He is as tall as a giant.
She is as fast as a rocket

runs fast-he is as fast as a leaped √
pretty as a flower.√
jumps well-as a horse √
is strong as a bull √
How could I say that something:
is hard as a brick wall √
feels soft as soap. √
is sweet as a box of candy. √
feels rough as sand paper. √

sounds noisy as a state high way.√
is light as a feather. √ Thursday 9th June 2011. W.A.L.T We are learning to identify and use alliteration in our writing . S.C *We can identify alliteration in text. *We can create examples of alliteration on different topics/consonants sounds.
